WWII Posters
World War II posters helped rally a nation. They were low-cost, easy to get to, and there. It was the ideal means for making victory of WWII the personal mission of every citizen. Because of this, government agencies, business, and private organizations issued many poster images. They linked the front with the home from. They wanted every American to boost production at work and home. These posters united art with advertising
Those who chose to use posters thought that it reflected the community directly. They wanted to make sure that everyone knew the urgency that the war was demanding. However, some people were uneasy about the posters. There were a lot of places that were non-governmental making the posters. This caused a lack of control over the content of the posters. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the poster making intensified.
To control the content and images on the posters, the government made the Office of War information. They designed and distributed government poster. Eventually, groups within the Office of War Information clashed on the designs. They had volunteer organizations that distributed the posters. Over time, the Office of War Information made six informational theme for the mass media:
- The Nature of the Enemy - In these posters they described the enemy. They said that he hates religion, prosecutes labor, kills minorities, and much more
- The Nature of our Allies - they used the United Nations theme showing that Britain, Russia, China, and Mexico were all united with them on the battlefronts.
- The Need to Work - They put out ways that American citizens needed to work to help win the war. They wanted people in factories, on ships, in mines, and many other places.
- The Need to Fight - They wanted everyone to be fearless. Fighting with whatever they had--bullets, bombs, bare hands and fighting wherever they needed to skies, sea, and land.
- The Need to Sacrifice - Americans needed to give up luxuries and devote all they had to help win the war.
- The American - they wanted everyone to know exactly what they were fighting for: the four freedoms; the Atlantic Charter, democracy, and an end to discrimination.
German WWII posters had a much different image than the American WWII posters. This was because, of course, they were fighting on different sides.
Vintage WWII posters can be found all over the internet. There are many places that you can get the posters appraised, and find out the true value. These posters are a piece of history.
